Woman stands to become US speaker for first time in history

66-year-old Nancy Pelosi stands to become the first woman to serve as US House of Representatives speaker and the third highest official after president and vice-president.

According to American political tradition, efficiency of a politician is determines by a sum of charity donations he or she manages to attract for his or her party. Pelosi has brought $100 m for four years of her leadership among the Democrats in the House of Representatives, RSN reports.

Moreover, Pelosi had managed to organize demoralized opposition congressmen, who showed unprecedented unanimity in voting 2005: Congress Democrats voted unanimously in 88% of cases.

So the Democrats have a female face at US mid-term elections. The US Democrats have picked up the majority of seats in the House of Representatives for the first time in the last 12 years.

The White House conceded 218 seats gained by the Democrats of 435, CNN reports.
